Assumptions

Thinking a bit about the nature of failure today, as I tried to install a automated watering system for the garden today. It didn't work.

In my talk this morning with Ward we talked about different techniques for responding to incidents. One is to focus on how to fix it, the other is to dive deeper into the reason the issue occurred.

When things don't work, it's because certain assumptions have been proven wrong. Often, we are not even aware that we have made those assumptions. But asking the deeper question of "why" allows us to identify and become wiser.

Bell Curve, Education, Shame and Control

I plan to dive deeper into this topic at some point.
